AUGUSTA, Ga. — Chilly air and swirling winds are creating a unique atmosphere on Moving Day at the 2022 Masters as the leaders prepare to get on the course at Augusta National in an attempt to position themselves for a green jacket on Sunday. Scottie Scheffler remains the 36-hole leader at 8 under, five shots clear of the rest of the top 10, which are just getting started with their third rounds.
Scheffler tied the low round of the week with a 67 on Friday to take control of the tournament. The No. 1 golfer in the world may put a tremendous bookend on what has been a fantastic three-month stretch that has propelled him into the spotlight. Justin Thomas started Round 3 the way he ended Round 2 — on fire — with two birdies through his first four holes to join the group at T2. Also still in the hunt is a number of major champions like Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama and others who are plenty capable of chasing down the big lead.
Will Scheffler finish it off from here and capture his first major championship with a green jacket? That’s the big question, and with so many stars lurking in the shadows, it makes for a compelling weekend of competition at one of the sport’s best and most prominent venues.

On Thursday evening, after shooting 76 in Round 1, Justin Thomas led just 10 professional golfers. On Saturday afternoon, 22 holes later, he trails just one. That’s insane.

JT making a move
Justin Thomas continues his climb back from a disastrous first round 76 with back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 to move to -3 for the championship. The 29 foot birdie putt he rolled in on No. 3 bodes well for his understanding of green speed on a day when other golfers are really struggling with the firm and fast greens.

Tiger’s four-putt drops him outside the top 35
Rick Gehman and I were just one CBS Sports HQ and he made a great point about Tiger’s four-putt on the 5th hole: it was a mental mistake, and we rarely see mental mistakes from him especially at Augusta. After missing the second putt Woods immediately tried to hit the next putt, did not mark the ball or reset his stance. A two-footer that should certainly have been an easy knock in maybe needed a little more attention, and now it’s cost him a huge stroke on a tight leaderboard.

Viktor Hovland one of the lone movers on moving day
Viktor Hovland may not be in a position to win heading into Sunday, but he’s given himself a shot to record his best Masters finish in three starts thanks some stellar play here on Saturday. His T32 in 2019 awarded him the honor of low amateur and then he bested that finish with a T21 in 2021. Thanks to four birdies in his last seven holes, Hovland is one of a few players in red numbers for the day and he’s gotten up to T24 on the leaderboard.
