Tyler Miller, 37, formerly an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army, failed to register as a sex offender in Ohio and fled to Newport.
A former U.S. Army soldier who failed to register as a sex offender in Ohio and fled to Maine was arrested in Newport by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Tyler Miller, 37, of Newport, had been sought by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio on a warrant issued by that department on July 20, 2020, for failing to register as a sex offender, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the U.S. Marshals Service, District of Maine.
The release does not say what day the arrest occurred. A call was placed Saturday to a phone number listed on the release for the U.S. Marshals Service, District of Maine, but the woman from the answering service said the office was closed.
“According to Department of Army documents, Miller was previously an E-4 in the Army and had been adjudicated guilty in October of 2009 to wrongful sexual contact under a Special Court-Martial,” the release says. “Miller was reduced to an E-1, confined for 11 months and later discharged from the service with a ‘bad conduct’ discharge.”
An E-4 is an enlisted soldier, with E-4 being the highest rank for junior enlisted recruits.
Investigators from various agencies, working together, determined Miller had fled from Ohio to Maine, according to the release.
“U.S. Marshals were able to safely apprehend Miller at an address in Newport without incident,” it says.
The U.S. Marshals Service Northern District of Ohio assisted U.S. Marshals Service Maine Violent Task Force, which is made up of members of the U.S. Marshals Service, Maine State Police, Maine Department of Corrections, Biddeford Police Department and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
